On my daughter Evelyn’s fifth birthday, I opened the door expecting guests and found my mother-in-law standing there instead.
She hadn’t spoken to us in years.
The party decorations were up, cake frosting covered the counter, and my little girl was inside arranging stuffed animals for their “birthday speeches.” Everything felt normal… until Eliza walked into my house and said:
“He still hasn’t told you the truth, has he?”
Then she dropped the bomb that shattered my world:
“Evelyn isn’t just adopted. She’s Norton’s biological daughter.”
I honestly stopped breathing for a second.
My husband admitted it was true. Years before, during a short breakup while we were dating, he had a one-night relationship with another woman. Eighteen months later, she contacted him saying she could no longer care for their daughter, who had Down syndrome, and planned to place her into foster care.
Instead of telling me, Norton secretly pushed the adoption through so we could become her parents.
All while I believed Evelyn had simply come into our lives by fate.
I was furious at the lie. Devastated by the betrayal.
But when Evelyn tugged on my dress asking, “Did I do something wrong?” none of that mattered anymore.
Because no matter how she came to us… she is my daughter.
And nothing will ever change that.
