A young woman who earned her pilot’s licence at 17, before she could drive alone, has been remembered by her family after the Florida jet crash of 1 November 2026. Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, was the co-pilot of a Learjet 60 that went down on Military Trail in Greenacres, Palm Beach County, killing all nine people aboard — seven passengers and both pilots. The aircraft had left Austin, Texas, bound for the Bahamas when the crew reported turbulence, icing and worsening weather, then began losing altitude fast.
Her mother, Camila Corteleti, has spoken about where the passion began. Nathalia’s father flew recreationally and introduced her to aviation, and by about the age of 12 she had decided flying would be her future. She spent long hours watching aircraft at Boca Raton Airport, imagining herself at the controls, attended West Boca Raton High School, trained through an aviation programme, and became a professional co-pilot with Fort Lauderdale-based Upper Jets, logging more than 1,300 flight hours by the age of 20.
Her sister remembered her courage and determination, and a longtime friend recalled how seriously she pursued her ambitions. Her mother summed up what flying meant to her daughter in four words: “She loved the freedom.” Relatives gathered near Boca Raton as investigators examined the wreckage, and hundreds of nearby residents were temporarily displaced by damage around the crash site.
Investigators are still establishing what caused the crash. They are reviewing flight communications, weather conditions and aircraft systems, and examining evidence that the jet may have begun breaking apart before impact. The cause remains undetermined despite reports of icing and severe turbulence, and the inquiry may eventually bring answers for the families — who remember a young woman who found her dream early, worked tirelessly toward it, and spent her brief life doing what she loved.
