I am 74 years old, and I adopted a German Shepherd whose owners wanted to have him euthanized.
When my son told me about Hunter, my heart broke. A young couple had brought this beautiful 3 Year-old German Shepherd to the shelter and were asking to have him put down because they were moving and “couldn’t handle such a big dog anymore.” A dog they had raised since he was a puppy—they just cast him aside as if he meant nothing. The shelter, of course, refused and took him in, but when I heard the story, I couldn’t stop thinking about him.
I told my son I wanted to adopt Hunter, but he was hesitant. He said, “Mom, he’s a big dog—what if he’s too much for you?” But I’ve had big dogs before, and I know how to handle them. Besides, when I met Hunter, I immediately saw that he was a gentle, obedient soul. I brought him home that very day. Now, Hunter follows me everywhere, curls up at my feet, and looks after me as if he knows I saved him. It’s hard to imagine anyone considering him a burden.
He’s part of my family now, and I’ll never let him go.
