“Freebirth” in the Pacific: Mother Gives Birth in the Ocean at a Nicaraguan Beach

Playa Majagual, Nicaragua — A 37-year-old mother has captured global attention after sharing footage of her self-directed “freebirth” — delivering her baby in the ocean as gentle waves rolled against her back.

Josy Peukert and her partner, Benni Cornelius, 42, drove to Playa Majagual on February 27, 2022, when her contractions began. Rather than heading to a hospital or hiring a midwife, the couple chose to welcome their son on the beach, guided entirely by instinct.

Peukert said she deliberately avoided prenatal scans and routine checkups throughout her pregnancy, seeking what she described as a birth “free from outside influence.” With their older children staying with friends, the couple arrived at the beach with only a few essentials — towels, gauze, and a bowl fitted with a sieve to catch the placenta.

After the birth, they returned home and weighed their newborn, Bodhi Amor Ocean Cornelius, who came in at 7 lb. 6 oz.

For Peukert, the setting was deeply meaningful. Her first hospital birth, she said, had felt traumatic; the second, at home, was better — but by the third, “even a midwife in my home was too much.” The ocean, she explained, offered peace and trust.

“We didn’t have a due date or a deadline,” she said. “We trusted our baby to make his own way.”

The video of Bodhi’s birth has since gone viral, drawing both praise and criticism. Supporters hailed it as a powerful display of maternal intuition and autonomy, while critics raised concerns about infection risks, the lack of medical assistance, and newborn safety.

Peukert, however, stands by her choice. “Everything felt right that day,” she said. “The experience made me feel really good.”
