Another Terrible Loss For The Bryant Family, Sending Prayers

Joe Bryant’s legacy extended far beyond being known as Kobe Bryant’s father. A standout at La Salle, he averaged more than 20 points per game during his college career before becoming a first-round NBA draft pick in 1975. He played eight seasons in the league with the Philadelphia 76ers, San Diego Clippers and Houston Rockets, appearing in 606 games and averaging 8.7 points and 4.0 rebounds.

After his NBA career, Bryant continued playing professionally overseas, particularly in Italy and France, before turning to coaching. He later worked with La Salle and spent parts of three seasons as head coach of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, along with coaching assignments in Japan and Thailand.

For Kobe, his father was also an important early influence. Kobe often credited Joe with teaching him how to understand the game, prepare properly and develop the discipline that would eventually help him become one of basketball’s greatest players.

Joe’s death came more than four years after Kobe and his granddaughter Gianna were killed in a helicopter crash in California in January 2020. The loss marked another heartbreaking chapter for the Bryant family and for Philadelphia’s basketball community.

Joe Bryant leaves behind a legacy built on basketball, coaching and family. To many who knew him, he will be remembered not only as the father of a legendary NBA star, but as a respected player and coach who made his own lasting mark on the sport.
