Three Sisters Give Birth on the Same Day in Irish Hospital
In a remarkable family coincidence, three Irish sisters welcomed their babies on the same day — at the same hospital — while a fourth sister, also expecting, was just days overdue.
The trio gave birth at Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar, County Mayo, on September 1, 2015, marking a day the hospital staff won’t soon forget.
Mairead FitzPatrick was the first to deliver, welcoming a baby boy named Thomas Óg at 3:25 a.m.
Her sister Joeline Godfrey followed later that morning, giving birth to a baby girl named Sorcha around 11:00 a.m.
By evening, the third sister, Bernie Ward, had delivered her son Phelim at 8:30 p.m.
All three babies were reported to be healthy and thriving, according to hospital staff, who described the event as “a first in memory.”
Their fourth sister, Christina Murray, was also a patient at the same hospital and days overdue at the time. “I’m a little disappointed not to have joined them,” she admitted, “but I’ll have my baby soon enough.”
Speaking to RTÉ, Mairead said the timing came as a total surprise.
“We were all due around the same time, but we never imagined we’d give birth within 24 hours. I was due on August 28, and Christina on the 30th — then everything just happened at once!”
Hospital maternity manager Mary Salmon said the coincidence left staff amazed.
“We’ve never seen anything like it — three sisters giving birth on the same day, and a fourth also due. It’s truly extraordinary.”
For the close-knit family from Cloonfad, County Roscommon, the shared experience has created a bond unlike any other — and three little cousins who will forever share a very special birthday.
