Beloved Voice Behind Decades of Romantic Hits Passes Away — Fans Remember a Remarkable Musical Legacy

Tony Butala, the founding member and longtime lead vocalist of the American vocal group The Lettermen, has died at the age of 87. The Lettermen themselves announced his passing on 1 November 2026, in an emotional Facebook tribute. He was the last surviving member of the group’s original lineup, following the earlier deaths of Jim Pike and Bob Engemann, and the announcement sent a wave of sadness through the music world.

Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Butala grew up in a large family and moved to California with his mother. He joined the Mitchell Boys Choir and contributed to productions associated with White Christmas and Peter Pan, was singing on Pittsburgh’s KDKA Radio by the age of eight, and a few years later was pursuing opportunities in Hollywood. In the late 1950s he helped establish the vocal trio that would become The Lettermen.

Across the decades that followed, The Lettermen recorded more than 75 albums, earned 18 gold records, and received four Grammy Award nominations, with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2020. Their romantic hits became the soundtrack of countless lives, including “The Way You Look Tonight,” “When I Fall in Love,” and “Hurt So Bad.” Butala retired from performing in 2019, and his final public solo performance was “Smile.”

In accordance with his wishes, there will be no public viewing. Celebrations of life are planned in Wisconsin and California, with additional arrangements to be announced, and the family has encouraged memorial donations to the Lakeshore Humane Society in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The Lettermen’s tribute remembered him as someone who welcomed everyone he met, found genuine happiness in sharing music, and was remembered for kindness, perseverance, and dedication to entertainment — and the group continues performing, carrying the harmonies he helped build to new audiences.
