Just two days after my 18-year-old son had packed up to live with his best friend, he unexpectedly returned home in tears, secured the lock behind himself, and murmured softly, “Mom, I need to confess something.”
The sound of the front door caught my attention while I was busy cooking at the stove.
“Luke?”
There was no reply.
A sudden dread washed over me as I turned around.
Standing right in the doorway was my son, tears streaming down his face as his jacket sleeve repeatedly wiped at his wet cheeks.
Switching off the stove right away, I pulled out a kitchen chair.
“Sit down, sweetheart. What happened?”
Luke remained standing.
Without a word, his hand reached back to turn the door lock silently.
Only then did his gaze meet mine.
“Are we alone?”
“Yes,” I answered cautiously. “Did you and Ben have a fight?”
“No. Please don’t call him.”
Hearing those words unsettled me far more deeply than seeing him cry.
Luke and Ben had shared a bond since early childhood, appearing so identical in personality and style that people who didn’t know them often mistook them for twins.
The moment they reached eighteen, moving out to rent an apartment together felt like their natural next step into independence.
Seeing them take that step had filled me with immense pride.
To me, it just seemed like my boy was taking his place in the adult world.
Yet right now, he completely avoided making eye contact.
“Luke, whatever happened, you can tell me. We’ll work through it together.”
“You don’t know that,” he snapped back instantly.
A sudden knot formed in my stomach.
A terrifying thought flashed through my mind that this crisis might involve Ben directly.
Had my son been keeping a secret because he was terrified to admit it?
Swallowing the lump in my throat, I forced out the question I hesitated to speak aloud.
“Sweetheart… are you two together?”
His head snapped upward in shock.
“What?”
“If Ben is more than a friend, you can tell me. You’re still my boy, and nothing will change that.”
“No, Mom.”
A rapid shake of his head followed.
“This has nothing to do with that.”
His voice then sank to a low murmur.
“It’s… it’s much worse.”
Though he finally sank into a chair, he kept his jacket pulled tightly closed to his neck, as if shielding himself from view.
I took a seat opposite him.
“Then tell me. Why did you really move in with Ben?”
For a few long seconds, Luke kept his eyes fixed on the floorboards.
“I didn’t move in because I wanted to leave home.”
“Then why?”
A trembling breath escaped his chest.
“Ben told me something.”
I held my breath and waited.
“I had to see for myself. I didn’t believe him at first. I thought he was wrong. But after what I found…”
His voice cracked midway through.
“…now I know it’s true.”
Panic made my heart race wildly.
“What did he tell you?”
Reaching into the inner pocket of his coat, Luke produced a folded sheet of paper.
I could see his hands shaking uncontrollably.
“I need you to promise me something.”
“What?”
“Promise you won’t lie to me.”
My gaze locked onto the document.
An overwhelming dread made me hesitate to touch it.
“Luke… where did you get that?”
His eyes locked onto mine.
“From Ben’s house.”
As I took the piece of paper, I braced for something absurd.
Perhaps it was just a silly joke, a simple mix-up, or something two eighteen-year-old boys had dramatically exaggerated.
However, as soon as the page opened in my hands, everything around me faded away.
I was completely paralyzed.
Sensation drained completely from my fingers.
With all the strength rushing out of my legs, I was forced to drop onto a chair.
For whatever had been written across that sheet of paper had nothing to do with a secret belonging to Ben…
