Ivanka Trump is facing criticism online after revealing plans for a major development project on a private island in the Mediterranean.
The daughter of president Donald Trump recently spoke about the venture during a podcast appearance, describing it as one of the biggest projects she and husband Jared Kushner have ever undertaken.
The project centers on Sazan Island, a largely undeveloped island off the coast of Albania that was once used as a military base.
While Trump described the island as an extraordinary opportunity, some critics were quick to voice concerns after details of the project resurfaced online.
“An unbelievable, beautiful island”
Speaking about the development, Trump explained that she first discovered the island while out boating with friends.
“I’m working on an incredible project with my husband in the Mediterranean. It’s massive in scale,” she said.
“It’s an unbelievable, beautiful 1,400-hectare private island in the middle of the Mediterranean.”
Trump said she hopes to preserve the natural beauty of the area while carefully integrating architecture into the landscape.
The project has reportedly been years in the making and forms part of broader development plans involving luxury tourism in Albania.
Social media users draw comparisons
Social media users, however, began comparing the project to Jeffrey Epstein’s private Caribbean island, Little Saint James, which became infamous due to the disgraced financier’s criminal activities.
Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein were photographed together on multiple occasions during the 1980s and 1990s.
However, Trump has repeatedly denied ever visiting Epstein’s private island. Still, many social media users rushed to voice their suspicions about Ivanka Trump’s project.
“Epstein Island will be rebuilt in the Adriatic,” one user wrote on X.
Some critics have also argued that development could threaten local wildlife and alter the island’s natural landscape.
“It’s home to flamingos, seals and sea turtles and they are going to build a resort on the once protected land,” another commenter claimed.
Supporters, however, point out that Sazan Island has a long history of military use and has remained largely inaccessible to the public for decades.
At the center of the debate is the question of how much development should be allowed on one of the Mediterranean’s most unusual and largely untouched islands.
Neither Trump nor Kushner has publicly responded to the online comparisons.
